The Book Club book

It's 1950.  Margery Benson realises that her life is going nowhere and so quits her job, and decides to travel to the South Pacific to look for a beetle unknown to science.  By advertising for a travelling companion she finds Enid Pretty, the complete opposite of who Margery initially had in mind.

This is an escapist story, an amusing and idiosyncratic adventure in which the characters push themselves to their limits.  But it is also a sensitive exploration of female friendship with profound and touching moments.

'The perfect escape novel for our troubled times.' PATRICK GALE

Geoff says:

"Rachel Joyce wrote The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry.  This book also has an unlikely protagonist, amusing memorable characters, and is surprisingly warm, tender and life-affirming."
