The Book Club book
Pride and Prejudice is a book that most people around the world would like to read, at least once! It is a romance, but also a novel about manners and how to behave. Mrs Bennet is single minded in finding a good match for each of her five daughters. This was a crucial task at this time. The humour, detail of society, and presence of a powerful and independent heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, make Pride and Prejudice one of the most popular novels in the English language of all time.
Geoff says:
"I chose this book - Jane Austen's most famous novel - because it is beautifully written, and surprisingly funny. When you get used to Jane Austen's style I do not think that the text is so difficult as there is a lot of dialogue. The story has been told and retold in so many ways - including influencing Bridget Jones' Diary!
