The Book Club book

Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns is an unforgettable epic that explores the lives of two women, Mariam and Laila, in Afghanistan under the Taliban. The book shows the struggles and difficulty faced by women while also exploring what gives them their strength and capacity for love.

Fifteen year old Mariam is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Twenty years later, a powerful friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila. When the Taliban take control, life becomes a bitter, desperate struggle. Yet despite the obstacles, with love, kindness and heroism they show ways to overcome the brutality.

Geoff says:

"This is a a deeply emotional and beautifully crafted novel by the author of The Kite Runner."
